That's Not Fair- by: Macy and Mickey

In 1918, a Quebec man was not allowed to get a seat in the "good" area of a theater because he was black. The man tried to take the matter to court, but the courts decided the theater had the right to decide who was allowed to sit in their seats.

What happened?
A black man went to watch a movie and wasn't allowed to go sit in the "good" seats because of his skin color. This man decided to take his matter to court and the judge said " the theater should be able to choose where the people sit.

Why was it unjust?
It was unjust because if you were born black then that means you are who you are and you should not be treated any different then white people. If a black man wants to go to the movie and sit in the good area he/she should be able to without anybody saying he can not. And if the court wants to say that the theater should be able to choose where the people get to sit they should not just move people with skin other then white.

Did it go against the Charters of Rights and Freedoms?
yes, it did because there is a law against racial acts called the equality rights.

Would it happen today?
It most likely it would not happen today known there is a law against it. Also if the theater were to do that then they would get in trouble because it is going against human rights.

racial discrimination (MadissonW)

Racial discrimination was when people who are black weren't treated fairly. people who were black couldn't do stuff that people who were white could do and that wasn't fair. this is against the charter rights and freedoms because everyone should be treated equal but not liking someone because someone says they're "colored". this could happen today like not letting someone be friends with them an facebook because they're black and stuff like that.

Women's voting rights

 Joss (:
In the 1900's there was a lot of rules who could or could not vote.but the women really wanted their right to vote. Then it happened they got the the right to vote in federal elections. But you had to be twenty one. then in 1970 then government decided to put the age you have to be to vote down to eighteen. Not letting women vote what's comparing men and women and it was saying that men were better and just because women were different meant that they should not vote. I think that it would not happen today. Today we are all equal and no one looks down on another person because there a girl.

Ambreah's Social

In 1885 the federal government, passed a law to restrict all Chines from immigrating to Canada. This was called the Chines Immigration Act of 1885. The only way the Chines could get in is if they paid a $50 fee per person just to enter the country. The only Chinese individuals exempted from the entrance fee were diplomats, government representatives, tourists, merchants, “men of science” and students.  In 1900 the amount was raised to $100 per person. In 1903 the amount was raised to $500 per person. This act superseded in 1923 by the Chinese Immigration act of 1923 also known as the Chinese Exclusion act, which banned Chinese immigration entirely.
It was unjust because any other race could enter Canada except for certain Chinese people, and if they did want to enter Canada they had to pay a fee of $100 dollars which was a lot at the time.  So the Chinese who were trying to enter Canada probably came to create a better and safer life for his or her family and they probably didn’t have much money so they can’t enter Canada.
It was against the Charter of rights and freedoms because, one of the rights is Equality rights and discriminating the Chinese is against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I don’t think it would happen today because we already have Chinese people living all over Canada, and we understand that we would be going against the charter of Rights and Freedoms. A lot of people understand not to be racist, so I don’t think it would happen today.

Voting Rights Camryn

For a long time in Canada only certain people that had the right to vote. Women weren’t allowed to vote until 1918 and Asian Canadian could not vote until 1948. First Nation people who lived on reserves weren’t allowed to vote in Canadian elections until 1960. For many years voting in Canada was restricted for certain groups. For more than one hundred years, individuals and groups have pressured the government to expand the right to vote to include more citizens. Over time laws on voting have changed so more citizens can participate and share in decisions that might affect them. The right that this went against is every citizen has the right to vote in an election of a member of the house of commons or of a legislative assembly and to be qualified for membership of therein.

The Chinese immigration act (1885) ADAM ROEMMELE

In 1885, Canada passed a law that would force Chinese people to pay $50 to enter the country. This is unfair because Since the average Chinese person makes less than $1 a day, it took a while to save up this money. In 1900, the bill was raised to $100, then, in 1903, $500 dollars, which was a small fortune to most people at the time. After that, Canada passed another law the only allows 1 Chinese immigrant per 50.8 tonnes of the ship they were sailing on. which means that 10 Chinese people could sail on a boat weighing 508 tonnes. this law goes against the charters Equality Rights, which means that everyone will be treated equally under the law, and since this law only affected Chinese people, it does go against the charter. So the Chinese should be able to enter the country without paying any fees. I do not think that it would happen today because some important Chinese people might need to come to Canada, but they'd have to travel on a boat, or pay lots of money, which would probably impact their opinion of Canada.

voting rights by: Raquel

We all know about voting. In fact, just recently we had an election! As you now know, Rachel Notley is now prime minister of Alberta, and if we were talking federally, then our premier is Steven Harper. We elected them both through voting. We live in a democratic society, where everyone has the right to vote (everyone the age of 18 and over, who has lived in Alberta for more than six months prior to the election, and federally, you have 18, and you have to be a Canadian citizen). It wasn't always that way though. Women were fighting the right to vote for a long time, and in 1917, their wish was finally granted. Women got the right to vote federally! They kept pursuing what they thought was right, and they finally got it! However, some people still didn't have the right to vote! Who were they? Well, the Asian-Canadians couldn't vote until 1948! That's 31 years later! Then there was the Inuit, who couldn't vote until 1950, two years after the Asian-Canadians. Ten years later (1960), first nations people living on the reserves gained the triumph of the ability to vote. Then the age for voting was lowered from 21 to 18. Fresh new faces eager to vote! Voting is an important thing that holds up our democracy, and I'm glad everyone (under the regulations) is now allowed to vote.

Racial discrimination tanner

In 1918 a man was not allowed to get a seat in the food part of the theatre because he was black. It was unjust because all people should be treated equally. Just because there skin colour is different doesn't mean there bad. It is unfair and would be aufle to live with every one calling you names and saying bad things about you because your another race. Yes it goes against the carter of rights and freedoms because it goes against their equality rights. I don't think it would happen today because people are more accepting that yes some people that were in there race did bad things. But most people have gotten over that and accept that that has passed and that it was only some people.

Racial Discrimination: Lauren Gomez

Everybody should have the same amount of rights no matter their skin color. That was not always the case for a long time, and unfortunately people are still being discrimanated today. A black man wanted to get a good seat in a theater, but the theater didn't allow him to because he was not white. Obviously the man was not pleased with this, so he took his dilemma to court. The court said that the theater could choose who they wanted to sit in their theater. This event only happened in 1918, which is not that long ago! Racial discrimination is a terrible thing and makes no sense. In the U.S.A white people and different colored people had different bathrooms and places to get a drink. It doesn't matter what your skin color is because we are all the same.

The War Measures Act (Holden)

In world war one, there were may Ukrainian people who were put in prison camps. This was unjust because, Ukrainians are people to you can't just shove random people in prison camps. This goes against the charter of right and freedoms because in the charter it says that all races have these rights. I think it would not happen today because we have signed peace treaty's, back then some people would take people of different cultures and keep them hostage, but today we don't really do that any more.

Racial discrimination by Brody

I'm 1918 a man was denied seats in a theatre  because he was black
This was very unjust  because everyone is equal and should be treated fairly. This heavily violated the charter of rights and freedoms because everyone has the right to not be discriminated against and equal treatment.this probably wouldn't of happened today because you  can take someone to Supreme Court for violating your rights.

The war measures act (Ethan)

During the world war many of the Ukrainian people were born in Canada and most of them were put in a prison camp. This also happened to many of the Japanese people in the second world war. This was unjust because i think this is unjust because they were born in Canada you can't throw these people in a prison camp. They have the right today maybe not back then but today people have the right to confess themselves to the judge. But back then they were there just because they were born in Canada. This to me should be against the charter rights and freedoms but this could be allowed but to me this should be against because it seems that they are putting these people in prison camps just because they were born in Canada. These people should have a say in why they should be in the prison camp. if this was happening today this is not right because first they would probably be sent to see a judge to confess then if they are guilty they are there but if there not then there fine and won't be sent to the prison camp. That's why i think this is against the charter rights and freedoms.

In my opinion I think that Racial Discrimination is terrible, but if you lived in the U.S.A or Canada and new people came you would either be scared our curios, but most people were scared so they didn’t treat new people right and if you grew up with people being mean to Black people you would learn to be mean to them to. Some people may say well if I was alive when Racial Discrimination was around I would change it but would you have known any better.
One of the reasons I think it was unjust was when Black people came they were humans to there is no reason they should have been treated differently than normal people but the sad thing is that they didn’t care our know.
For the charter rights and freedoms the Racial Discrimination would not pass the rules of the freedoms.

Racial Discrimination

In 1918, a Quebec man was not allowed to get a seat in a certain area of a theater because he was black. He was discriminated because of the color of his skin. It is not fair that he was treated differently just because of the way he was born. The color of someone’s skin shouldn’t restrict them from doing certain things. It went against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because the Equality Rights say that everyone has to be treated equally, no matter what their religion, gender, or skin color is. I don’t think that would happen today because even though at that time, Canadians did not always respect people’s rights and freedoms, but Canada has changed since then. Everybody should be treated equally, and everyone should respect each other, no matter what.

THE INDIAN ACT

Soon after Canada became a country, it passed the Indian act.  These laws put Indian agent in charge of all first nations people in Canada.  First Nations people who lived on reserves had to get a permit from the Indian agent to go into town, to sell their own cattle, or just do about anything else on their own land.  The Indian act was passed into law on April 1985 to bring the Indian act into line with gender equality under the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms.  It was unjust because they were discriminating First Nations people by not using racial equality .  My opinion would be that it wouldn't happen today because the Canadian government is a fair government.

Olivia Grant-Voting Rights in Canada

 Voting Rights in Canada

What Happened?
Minority groups were denied the right to vote. The only people allowed to vote were rich male Canadian citizens 18 and over.

Why it was unjust?
All groups should be able to have the right to express their opinion. Not just a small group of people who fit a certain standard.
Whether it went against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
It went against the fundamental freedoms, the democratic rights and the equality rights. In the fundamental freedoms it says you have the freedom of belief but back then minority groups were not allowed to share their beliefs. The democratic rights state says you have the right to vote but they didn’t. Also in the equality rights it say they have equal benefits which minority groups did not have.
Do you think it would happen today?

Not in Canada, people now realize that everyone should be treated equal. All people are important no matter their gender color of skin or religious belief. People nowadays accept that.

THAT'S NOT FAIR ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What happened: A black man was not allowed to get good seats in a theater because he was black. The black man took matters to court and the judge said "the theater gets to choose who gets the seats!"

This is unjust because in the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms every one back or white should be treated the same  way.

It was against the Charter of rights and every person should be treated like every body else.

This is something that I wouldn't think would happen today, but its possible that somebody may offend another person like that today

It was agents the charter of rights and freedoms the charter of rights and freedoms means everyone gets treated the some No matter what there religion was or what they believed in or what color of skin they had. Chinese people had to pay 500$ to get into Canada just because of there haretege that's change now that the charter of rights and freedoms came alone

The Chinese Immigration Act Kate

In 1885 a law was made that forced most Chinese immigrants to pay $50 to move to Canada. In 1900 the fee was raised to $100 and then in 1903 it was raised again to $500.
This law was created to slow the Chinese immigrants from entering Canada, so it was naturally unjust. No one else had to pay the tax except for the Chinese. It was very hard to pay the tax as well, most Chinese people earned less than $1 a day, so $500 dollars would be almost three years wages a small fortune.
This law went against the rights in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically Equality rights. These rights state that no person should be treated differently because of race, gender, religion, etc. Because of their race, the Chinese had to pay more than other people, so this goes against the rights.
Unfortunately, back then we thought it was right to restrict the Chinese from coming into our country, but this would not happen today. We know that the Chinese are equal and that they should be treated equally. We know that everyone has rights, and that the Chinese Immigration Act was incredibly unfair.

I don't think something like this would happen. people would be allowed in a movie theater if there skin was a diffrent color

The War Measures Act~ Madi N.

The War Measures Act

During World War 1 (1914-1918), many people with a Ukrainian background were put in prison camps. Even if they were born in Canada but there parents or grandparent were born in Ukraine, they still could be taken to one of the camps. In World War 2 (1939-1945) the same thing happened to the citizens that had a Japanese heritage. In a camp in Topaz, Utah there were jobs that paid from $12-$19. A girl named Reiko Oshima Komoto wrote in her blog that "Medical doctors were paid nineteen dollars, while my Father received sixteen dollars for inspecting the camps bathrooms." People who were in the camps were lucky to have enough money to buy a house once they were out of the camp. It went against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because it states that people from all heritages are Canadian citizens and should be treated equally. I don't think it would happen again if there was another World War but there still are many racist people.

in the world war and world war 2 the Ukrainian and the Japanese were captured and put into prison camps then a bill was was passed were the federal government had control  over everyone the bill had no opposition the federal government then made factory's produce weapons and ammunition.
the reason the bill was unjust was because why would only Japanese and Ukrainians get put into prison camps and not anyone else. it did take away the right of the freedom because no one got a say in what they wanted to do, but no one opposed to the bill so they needed to follow the orders. i don't think it would happen but i could happen if we went into a war and we were in a big danger but since democracy we would still need to have a vote for the bill.

The War Measures act Hunter

In world war one and world war two the Ukrainians and Japanese were captured and put into prison camps then a bill was passed and the federal government was in total control. I think it was unjust for the Ukrainian and the Japanese because for no reason they got put in prison camps, and they did not get a say in what they wanted. It did go against the charter of rights and freedom because it took away the right of freedom, because they did not get to do their own thing. I do not think it would happen today, but I think it could happen.

                                                 Chinese immigration act 1885

every person born Chinese shall pay $50 except diplomatic corps,or government representatives, and their suite and their servants, consuls and consular agents, tourists merchants, men of science and students, who bearers of certificates of identity. A law stated that was passed saying only one Chinese immigrant could come to Canada for every 50.8 tons of the ship they were travelling on for that one voyage. That mean't that only 10 immigrants could come to Canada on a ship weighing 508 tons.

The Chinese immigration was unjust because Canada wouldn't let Chinese people come into Canada without paying a fee.  Or there was special people that didn't have pay the fee. The Chinese immigration act of 1885 was against the charter of rights section 6 mobility rights that state that a Canadian citizen has the right to live and move to different places in Canada with no trouble.

No I don't think that it could happen because the legislature of Canada is very strict of the rules and would most likely not let this happen to any Canadian citizen ever again.

voting rights santana

Right know in Canada everyone can vote if they have lived in the area for 6 months in the area you are  voting in and you have to be at least 18. Right now it does not matter if you are part of the first nations or you have a different skin color or if you’re a women because everyone is equally important. But voting was not always like this in Canada, until 1970 the voting age was 21. Also women were not allowed  to vote but the 1918 they finely could unless they were first nation or something. Did you know that first nations could not vote till 1960. You may think that was a long time ago but what if you were someone that lived then and you could not vote because you are a girl or fist nation how would that make you feel? This is still happening in other places but it cannot happen  in Canada for now because it is against the  charter of rights and freedoms, because every one is equal and all deserve to vote. It does not matter if you are from a different contrey as long as you have been in that place that you are voting in for 6 muonths and are 18 or older you can vote.voting is in the democratic rights.

Racial discrimination

A man in 1885 not being able to get a good seat in the theatre because he was a different colour is not fair. Just because people are different colours doesn’t mean that you should treat people differently. God made us all different for a reason and we need to respect that. This goes against the equality right, this right says that people need to be treated the same whether they are a different colour or gender. I do not think that this would happen today because people are treated more equally now.  This is definitely not a fair circumstance and it is not right by any means.

Eli's new Chinese Immigration Act of 1885=)

The Chinese immigration Act of 1885 was the Canadian act where all Chinese immigrants had to pay $50 to come in to Canada, no one else had to pay the fee. In 1900 the fee was raised all the way to $100, this was very difficult to pay because most of the immigrants only earned $1 per day. In 1903 the fee was raised yet again all the way to $500. An average Chinese immigrant made that amount of money in 2 years. In a couple years the law changed yet again this time it wasn’t about how much they had to pay. The law was changed so that for every 50.8 tonnes of cargo only 1 Chinese immigrant could come, so if the boat was carrying 508 tonnes you could only have 10 Chinese immigrants. By 1923 they changed it so much that they completely didn’t allow Chinese to immigrate into Canada. This is more formally known as the Chines Exclusion Act of 1923. This went against the equality rights in the charter of rights and freedoms. I don’t believe that it could happen today because we are enforcing our rights and freedoms more than we were back then.

The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 (Kayden)

This acted charged Chinese people a tax of $50 to move to Canada. Most of the Chinese earned less then $1.00 a day, and it would take a long to time to save up all that money. Then in 1903, they had to pay $500 to move to Canada, and no one else had to pay that, except for the Chinese people. Later another law was passed, that only one Chinese immigrant could come to Canada for every fifty tons of the ship they were traveling on. That meant that only 10 immigrants could come to Canada on a ship weighing five hundred tons. I don not think at all that this stuff would ever happen today, and this does go against the charter of rights and freedoms.

The Chinese Immigration Act (Izzy)

The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 placed a tax on all Chinese immigrants moving to Canada. This law forced them to pay a fifty dollar fee to enter the country. In 1900, the fee was raised to 100 dollars, and in 1903 the fee was raised again to 500 dollars. Later, another law was passed declaring that only one Chinese immigrant could travel to Canada per 50 tons of the ship they were travelling on. That meant that if they were taking a 500 ton ship, only ten Chinese could travel on that ship. This act was also very unjust. It made the Chinese feel unwelcome, when really they are just as welcome as everyone else. This act was also very racist, as everyone except the Chinese could immigrate to the country without paying any money. This act also goes against The Charter of Rights and freedoms. It violates mobility rights, the right to move in, out, and around the country. It also violates equality rights, as the act promoted inequality by placing a tax on only Chinese immigrants. However, we can rest assured that nothing like this would ever happen today, as levels of discrimination have gone down significantly in many countries. We are now also protected from acts like this by The Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Chinese Immigration Act of 1885

The Chinese immigrants  had to pay a fee of $50 tax to move to Canada and by 1903 they would have to pay $500 to enter. It is unjust because it is discriminating the minority of Chinese immigrants and it would be very hard to pay it considering the fact that they only earned less than $1.00 a day. It went against the charter of rights and freedoms by not giving them equal rights to others. I don't think it would happen today because it goes against the charter of rights and freedoms and people would know that is not right because they took the act off at one point so they must of knew it was not right.

In 1918, a man from Quebec was not allowed to sit in a good seat in a theater because he was black. The man also tried to take this problem into court but the judges sided with the theater and said that the theater could decide who got which seat. This was unjust because people should be allowed to sit where they want in a theater regardless of their skin color and he should have acted sooner instead of waiting to take the issue to court. This goes against the equality rights part of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. This would not happen today because we now have all these laws in place which would help to prevent something like this from happening again. The theaters are also not as racist today as they were back then. This issue is extremely racist and would not happen today.

In Canada, we used to charge Chinese people 50 dollars just to get into Canada well other foreigners from different countries paid nothing to enter Canada. Later the Chinese had to pay 500 dollars when most people only made 1 dollar a day. This was unjust because the Chinese did nothing to gain this amount of disrespect from Canada . Yes this did break one of the rights because you can't treat someone this way just by their looks and were they are from. I don't really think that this would happen today because something this big would not have slipped by the public so easy.

this is not fair because people should not be judged or made fun of just because they have a different skin  couler. just because they look different doesn't mean that your any worse or better than any one  else and we are all different and unique in our own different way.

I think that it was against the the charter rights and freedoms because they were not letting that man have any thing good or have any good things just because he is black.

Chinese Immigration act of 1885
By: Julia Zahorouski
The Chinese Immigration act of 1885 placed a head tax on all Chinese immigrants coming to Canada, forcing them to pay a 50 dollar fee to enter the country. In 1900 the fee was raised to 100 dollars (Lots of money back then). In 1903 the amount was raised to 500 dollars! The equal amount of two years wages, which was a small fortune to the Chinese immigrant s as well as other Canadians at the time. Later another law was passed declaring that only 1 Chinese immigrant for every 50 tons of the ship they were travelling on for that one voyage could come over. That meant only 10 Chinese immigrants could come to Canada on a ship that weighs 500 tons! That is not fair to the families  of the immigrant that came to Canada because they would not be able to see their family again until they work and earned enough money to either bring their family over or to move back to wherever they came from.

The Immigration act was not fair to the Charter rights and freedoms because they would not charge anyone else it was just the Chinese Immigrants coming to Canada and it was an unfair total money they had to pay it started out as 50 and in 8 years it got raised to 500 dollars even now that is quite a bit of money, imagine how much that would be back then if you compared it to now that would cost about 5000 dollars instead of 500!

The Chinese Immigration act made it that Chinese people who wanted to come to Canada had to pay a $50.00 fee to come into the country.  Later in 1900 the fee was raised to a hundred dollars. This was a lot of money back then because people didn’t have as much money as they do today. Three years after this in 1903 the fee was raised to $500.00. Later after all this another law was put in place that only one Chinese immigrant could come per very fifty tons. This meant that only ten people could come on a ship that weighed 500 ton tons and that made it very difficult to come from China to Canada. This goes against the charter because there is a right that says that everyone has the right to enter and leave Canada. This probably could happen today because there are lots of people who don't want people to come into Canada and they might raise a fee for immigrants. Later on in 1923 this law was superseded by the Chinese Immigration act of 1923.

We are silent is a fundraising event, for which we agree to be silent for 24 hours. We were not allowed to talk, although I'm sure most of us did at least once. It was a fun, frustrating, and enlightening experience. It really makes you think about all of the people worldwide who are silent. It really makes you want to stand up for all of the child labourers worldwide, who instead of going to school every day, work every day. They are forced to work up to twelve hours, most of the time with no breaks, in horrible conditions. Events like this give us a chance to put ourselves in their shoes, and make us want to really stand up for these kids and fix this problem.

Yesterday (April 15) My Grade did the "We Are Silent" mission project to raise awareness and donations for children who do not have a voice. (Children who don't have a say in what will happen for them now, and in the future.) The vow was to not talk for a 24 hours. If we did, anyone who saw it would put a tally on a big piece of paper. That paper was on the wall by our classroom. It was hard because if more than one person saw you speak even a single word, there would be a bunch of tallies put on the paper. There were also some people who just put tallies for the fun of it, or put more than one when they saw one of us talk. Us being frustrated about that was part of the mission project because there are many kids who would get hurt if they said anything against what they are told. My teacher told us that if we get mad about it, we should think about why we are doing this. Some girls get shot just for wanting to go to school. There are boys that are forced into a child army to fight. There are even some girls who have to marry and have children very young. We all tried really hard.
After school was over, I had to go to dance with my friend. We gave a note to our teacher saying what we were doing. My teacher said it was a really great thing for us to do. She asked everyone who was dancing to stay silent as well to support us. It was really helpful and I managed to push through all 24 hours.

Yesterday my class did a mission project called we are silent. We all picked a time and started our sielence. We hade to go 24 hours with out talking. We did this for the people around the world who don't have the voice. It was a bit frustrating at some points but it was fun at others. It opened up my eyes and made me realize how blessed I am to have the right to speak freely.

yesterday, my class 6S did a vow of silence in order to raise awareness for people who don't have a right to freedom of speech. The vow lasted for a full 24 hours, from 8:00pm one night to 8:00 pm another night.

Yesterday the grade sixes at my school took a vow of silence. The vow of silence was to raise money and awareness with people with no voice. When you hear "no voice" you may think can't physically speak. What it actually means is people who can't speak up for themselves or what they believe in.

This task was extremelymely hard. When you see your friends on the playground and you have been  waiting to talk to them. Or needing to tell or ask a teacher something but you have to wright it out or some kind of sign language just to tell somebody something.

Some people decided to do complete silence which means no laughing or talking. Sometimes it would just come out because we are not adjusted to not talking for that long. I can even admitt that I accidentally spoke.

I think that this is a very important thing to do. It shows respect and maturity.

Ambreah

Yesterday my classmates and I did the vow of silence. It was very hard to not talk when you really wanted to say something. The little kids tormented you sometimes, but you couldn't say anything. The only thing that you could do was walk away. After everything was done though, it was worth it. We knew we did it for a good reason, and to show that we support the kids who don't have a voice when no one else supports them. Now I know what these kids have to live with everyday, being silent is very hard. So I'm grateful for the rights I have for free speech, and for the people that support me.

Yesterday our grade six class did the vow of silence to spread awareness and to raise money for charity for the people all around the world who are silent. It was difficult when you wanted to say something but you couldn't say it. Yesterday we got a little feel of how the other people around the world fell who can never say anything. It was really different from all the other days of school, there were no people answering questions with speaking they would just have to write it down on a white board, but not everyone had a white board so they were completely silent the entire time. Some people talked, but I think mostly everyone did well.

Jenna

This post is about "we are silent".We did this yesterday and it was very silent. But some people did whisper at recess. We are silent is about people being silent for people that can't have a voice. Well I think that this was a great way to do this.well my class almost did I the whole day.

Raquel's reflection for We are Silent

Yesterday my grade six class did a vow of silence. We were trying to raise awareness about people around the world who can't speak up for themselves. These people are being deprived of their basic human rights, and they need help. I think that the vow of silence was very fun to do. Yes, it was hard, but it was for a good cause. It was especially hard at youth, and I got really frustrated when I found out we were doing worship at the beginning and I couldn't sing! I am glad I had decided to start at 7:45 the previous night, so I could stop at that time during youth. It might have been really fun trying not to talk the whole time, though. Some of my youth leaders were really amazed that I could do that. They said it would be really hard for them as adults to do that. I think it was really great that we could do that for other people. Raising money for others is a good thing to do. I really enjoyed it.

Ethan

Yesterday the grade 6 classes raised money and awareness for kids who are silent. To raise money we collected pledges for donations then yesterday we were silent for 24 hours. I thought that was a good way to feel how children around the world were suffering from not having a voice. There were parts that were  really challenging like when your friends maybe from other grades can talk they ask you a question and you can't answer them. The most hardest part was when I was running canteen for lunch hour there would people asking for a juice and I couldn't answer I just had to do it. Then I knew I was being silent for a goood cause it was a lot of fun at the same time because all my friends were doing the same thing so we had support for anyone who had a hard time doing it. I could say that this was a learning experience to see how children around the world were suffering and people like us if you live in Canada or the United states we don't think about that stuff sometimes we can end up taking things for granted. So this made me think of what kids were going threw around the world and that we were very lucky to have what we have because if you think there are kids who can't even stick up for anyone or stick up for themselves because they can't have a voice that's what I learned from the vow of silence.

Lauren

Yestrday our class did a vow of silence. We did the vow of silence to raise awareness and donations for all the childern in the world who have no voice, because they are in slavery or in war. I think that my class did a pretty descent job of being silent. I only talked, maybe five times. I found that it was actully quite fun, many other people enjoyed it and found it challenging. Unfortunately some people decided to talk and not participate, so that's to bad, but over all I had a fun time and enjoyed raising awareness and donations!

Vicky

On April 15 the grades sixes took a vow of silence to raise awareness and money for people who are silent. It was a whole day where we couldn't speak to anyone or say a word. It was hard for most people, but others didn't speak at all (which was amazing). The vow of silence is a campaign for those who do not have a right to say their opinions or speak at all, the vow of silence is worldwide and many others took place in it too. You can also donate money too. 🙊#wearesilent

Mats

Yesterday grade 6 took a vow of silence to help raise awareness for kids that can't talk. It was really challenging to most of us because we would accidentally talk because we totally forgot. I did ok I accidentally talked but other then that it went well for me. It was also hard because when people were talking to us it was hard to explain something without talking. I think grade 6 did a great job of raising awareness.

Holden

Yesterday Grade 6 took a vow of silence to raise money for people who don't have the right to speak there opinion. Taking the vow of silence was hard to do because, little kids kept trying to make me talk, and talking to people is just something you could do if your bored. No many people could stay silent the whole day. We tried not to, but lots of people talked. At the end of the day we about 80 Tallis on the board, it hard very hard but I think we did good.

Yesterday  the grade sixes at our school participated in We are Silent. We weren't supposed to talk for 24 hours to show what it's like for millions of children around the world who don't have a voice. I thought it was a challenge, when others in your grade are talking and you wanted to say be quite or something like that. I think the hardest part were all the people trying to make you talk. At the canteen we had to write everything on white boards. I felt that the people who didn't want to participate but had to that they were just whispering to each other the whole day. I am not saying I didn't talk at all yesterday because I did talk as well. It was especially hard to ask questions when teachers were giving lessons. I would do it again because thought thing that you understood  was much easier with out the talking but asking questions if you didn't know was harder. I feel more aware now of what it's like for the kids around the world without a voice

Matthew

Yesterday we could not talk. We were raising money for a charity. It was realy hard not to talk just like the people who don't have a say. So that is way we are raising money for charity so we can free the childeren. So that they can live there life's.

Brody

Yesterday grade six had a vow of silence to raise money for the children in Africa with no voice. Many younger grades donated and were silent to raise money and awareness. The goal of this project is to raise enough money for kids to have a voice and have there basic human rights.it was very hard for us because some little kids were trying to make us talk by tapping us calling us names. The grade six class made it through barely though because It was extremely hard not to talk for a whole 24 hours. But I am proud to say that we raised some money to make a child somewhere have a voice and  there basic human rights to education a voice clean water and food.

Yesterday our grade six classes were silent... We tried to stay as silent as possible for twenty four hours. It was hard. It was also quite anyoying some times because you wanted to tell you friends something or talk to them. But most importantly it taught us how the people and children feel when they don't have a voice. We also got to learn how to communicate differently. It was also quite fun to have a challenge.

Brae

yesterday my grade six class did the baw of silence to raise money who don't have the right to speak their opinions. On April 15th everyone in grade six couldn't speak throughout the whole day so we could see what it was like not to speak your opinion on something. Maybe on thing you wanted to try. that you you wanted to try. It was pretty tough because you would always be tempted to talk to your friends. But we would have to try not too talk because if some of the kids were seen talking during work they would get punished.
So we decided to see how hard you would be tempted to talk but know your not aloud.

Adam B

Yesterday our grade 6 class took a vow of silence. A vow of silence is where we don't talk for a full 24 hours to raise money/awareness for people who have no voice to speak up for what they want or believe. I think it was very hard to stay silent for a whole 24 hours. Sometimes some people talked and didn't even realize they were. I kind of felt really bad for everyone who had no voice, such as children in child labour, and young girls forced to get married and have kids, etc. Some younger kids tried to trick us into talking by annoying us and/or teasing us then they would they would go write a tally up on a board that we had for anyone who heard a grade 6 talking. I thought it was good to try something like that, it opened up my eyes to child labour and other thing like that.

A bit ago, we played a game called Darfur is dying where we learned about refugee camps. the game is where you play as a character who needs to get water to grow crops to feed Darfur. when you go to get water you need to hide from cars with men in it. if you get captured then your character dies and you need to select another character. the game teaches you a lot about what it's really like around the world.

Darfur<~>Madi N

Recently in our class, we played an online game called "Darfur is Dying" to learn about refugee camps.

Darfur is a camp in Sudan that really exists.

In the game you have to choose a character to be first. The first task is running from your camp to a fresh water well to get water for your camp. The kids run faster and some can run away from the Janjaweed soldiers that would capture you if they caught up to you. The parents can carry more water than the kids can but do not run as fast.

The idea of the game is to keep your camp alive and well. So you have to keep up your water supply by running to the well again. You bring some water to the fields to grow food and you give resources to the medical place to get medicine.

You can walk around and click on the question marks to learn more about Darfur.

It was fun and sad and I definitely recommend it!

Darfur Joss

Last week in our class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. We had to forge for water and keep a camp healthy for 7 days. When I was forged the water you have to go to a well outside the village but you would to hide from the Janjaweed soldiers. otherwise they will capture you and you will lose that person you picked. I think this game is fun but kind of scary because it's real.

Darfur Ambreah

Recently in class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. It is where you pick a child or the mother to get water for there camp. On the way to the well you have to dodge Janjaweed soldiers who have huge guns. If they see you you ether get ran over or captured and  taken  away.
It's really sad that they have to go get water from a well that is really far away from their camp while being in a life or death experience if they do get water and get to your camp on the game you water the fields or give the water to someone. They are buildings in your camp  and if you click on one of the buildings it will tell you a really sad story.
I realized how grateful I need to be just for the simplest things like safety, water, and the country I live in.

Darfur Hunter

last week in our classroom we played a game on the net books called Darfur is dying to learn about how hard it is to be there and what they have to go through just to live and so I realized that I live an easy life compared to them and I also learned that no one helps them they just leave them be.

Darfur, Lauren

Recently in our class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. The game makes me sad and scared. It is so hard to beileve that children my age and younger have to live a life that way. I also wonder why so many people have to be so evil and mean! The game made me think more indepth of how bad people can be, and that the people being attacked can't do much about it, because they will be killed or captured and bad stuff happen to them, just because they tried to help. Meanwhile we have nice water in our toilets and fancy clothes made from them and they have people attacking them, not much fresh water unless you go out and get it at a high risk of being killed! Be thankful for what you have!!

Darfur Ethan

In our class we have been playing a game called Darfur is dying to learn about refugee camps.
In this game you have to use a the Characters the the game gives you. In the game you have to Forge for water and take care of your camp and if you get caught by the soldiers you have to back to the main menu and choose another character. What this game teaches me is that in this place you have to work to live but in Canada you don't need to do that so in Darfur you need to stay away for soldiers.
and in the Game you could get bought as a slave or killed by soldiers if your a women you could die or get rapped but not in the game that's all i learned for Darfur is dying.

Darfur matthew

Recently in our class, we played a game Darfur is Dying to learn refugee camps. We played threw a game that you try to get water and food for the camp with out getting taken. The kid can bring less water.

Recently in our religion class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. It is a sad game that teaches us about what happens in places like Darfur. Darfur is a very small place in Sudan that has lots of poverty and child labor. In the game you forage for water and try to keep your village for water. Every time that you forage for water you are in risk of being caught by the Janjaweed soldiers and killed or if you are a women you could even be raped (but not in the game). You have to grow food and get medical supplies for your little town. The objective of the game is to keep your village alive for at least 7 days!

Darfur by:Raquel

Recently in our religion class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about Refugee camps. It is a sad game, but it shows the danger that the people have to go through. Going to forage for water alone is very dangerous, and the children risk being caught, the women were usually raped. The grown men don't even dare to forage for water, with risk of being caught or killed. Darfur is an area in Sudan, and the janjaweed solders are the ones that terrorize the people of Darfur. It is would be very hard to live in Darfur, risking your life for a bucket of water to nourish your family. I find it very sad that the children have to go through that.

DARFUR BROOKE.M

Recently in our class,we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps.
It is a really hard game but also really fun to play but you have to run go to get water  for their village. And while you're playing the game there are army guys who come and capture you and also
get beat to death. There is  a very small  amount of people to play in the game. You also have to hide from the army guys.

recently in class we played a game called darfur is dying. to learn about refugee camps.this is a game were you have to survive by planting food and fetching water for your camp or they will die.If you get captured by the militia you lose a character. kids can run faster but cant carry much water but adults can carry much more water but cant run very fast.by getting water u can grow crops for your camp and keep u camp alive.darfur is a place in sudan and the group there is called the janjaweed militia.

Recently in our class,we played a game called darfur is dying to learn more about refuge camps. It was a sad game to learn that stuff like slavery goes on over the world. Mostly that they had to go tons of miles to get water and try to avoid getting caught. When you went to the camp you had a meter for an attack to come and kill them. When in the village it gives you facts about what it is actually like to live there.

Darfur Tanner

Recently in our class, we played Darfur is dying to learn about refugee camps. It was sad to see what happened. So many people were killed. it scary to know that any time all of that could come into Canada or any country.

Darfur Brae

Recently in our class, we have started playing this game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. In this game you start picking a kid or adult and what you need to do. Is run in the desert and try to get water for your group. Then with water you can get food to feed your people. But sometimes when you are running for the water there are these people in trucks called Janjaweed soldiers who would capture you then that person was unplayable. To avoid Janjaweed soldiers you need to hide behind bushes shrubs and rocks then they will drive right passed you.

Last week in our class we played a game called Darfur is Dying which is about refugee camps. In Darfur is Dying you have to forage for water, grow crops and keep your camp healthy to survive for seven days. While you're foraging for water you can get caught by the Janjaweed soldiers and taken away. In the camp you can bring water to the builder to make bricks for new houses.

Darfur Kayden

Recently in our class we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. This game is fun, but is sad at the same time. All of this is happening in real life. And this is sad, because these people have to hide, just to get water to keep there village alive. All those brave people who do this, who could die by doing it, are amazing people. Imagine living like these people, I feel so bad for the people living like this, I wish I could help the people that live like this.

Darfur Mats

Recently in our class, we played a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. The game showed me how the life in refugee camps are. It's fun but a really sad game the point of the game is you choose a character and you have to forage water. But you have to watch out for soldiers in trucks. If you fail to get water and you get captured and killed its really sad. It showed me the horrible life they have to face and how kids have to risk the life to help the others and survive. Darfur is a place in Sudan where lots of people have to survive against the Janjaweed soldiers.

Darfur Vicky

In our class, we have been playing a game called Darfur is Dying to learn about refugee camps. This game teaches us about how children and women, men are forced to be slaves work for the rich. Many children are forced to get water for a little water pump that is very far away without getting caught   by the janjaweed soldiers in this game. In this game there are people ranging from the ages of 8-32.  (children and adults)

Darfur Zac

Recently in our class, we played a game called Darfur is dying to learn about refugee camps. I thought the stories told under the question marks on the home base map was incredible. Stories of girls that are 11 years old being tortured for not weaving fast enough. I feel sick thinking that some people went in and burnt a man so badly he cant move his arms at all.

Darfur Izzy

Recently in class we played a game called Darfur is dying to learn about refugee camps. The goal of the game is to keep your camp alive for seven days. You get to choose a character and you have to run to get water while avoiding the militia. After you get water you can bring it back to grow food, bring it to the medical center, and other things. As you go through the game it teaches you about cruel things that are happening in places like Darfur. The game is fun, but it teaches you about what things are like in other places that are being ravaged by war. When you realize that these things are happening it makes you grateful for what you have, It makes you thankful that you don't have to experience these things.

Day 42,

Yesterday I didn't get my meal because I got only one loaf of bread at the market when I was supposed to get two loafs of  bread. I dont understand because we have 4 loafs of bread already, but my masters son has to go yelling and screaming about how I am trying to starve him by not buying ONE loaf of bread!!My masters son is always bregging about how he gets to vote when he is older and that I can't. He is 12 just like me but he acts like he is way older. Ugh he gets me so worked up sometimes! Anyway Philip A.K.A my master is always at the stupid agora voting about how he dosen't like this or that, and then he comes home and says " Ohh, my what a hard day today I am so teird. We should get a break from voting. Make me a nice hardy meal." but all he does is sit around.  A few weeks ago I asked Philip if I could get 10cents, and he got so mad and then he got his wife Harriot into the problem and it was terrible. Ohh gosh Harriot is coming, bye jounal hope nobody finds you!!!

The klepsydra (Vicky)

What is the klepsydra used for? The klepsydra was used to tell the passed time which is called a timer. The process of filling the klepsydra was easily interacted so that water could just flow out the tanks rather just into them.
Where is it from?
The klepsydra was from Athens.
When was it made?
It was probably made around 430 B.C
What does it teach me?
The klepsydra teaches me that they used water to time the time but today we use iPhones and iPods to time the time.
Who made it?
the person who made it is unknown.

life as a slave (matthew)

Dear Mom

Being a slave is hard. We have to work all day and most of the nights. I am doing  well and and so is my bother Bob. We do get one day brakes and that's all . I hope you are doing well and stay safe.
                                                                                                                sincerely Joe
Dear family

I think this is not fair That we girls have to work and the men just sit around doing nothing. we as women can not vote. if we don't do a good job of working than we do not get food the next day. the other people get food and only sometimes we get to visit with people and then we go back to work. And it not  I don't think just the men should vote because  everyone should get to vote. And also everyone says that it is equal to vote but I think it is not fair.
