Athenian democracy (Matthew)

I don't think its fare. The voting is fare and all but slavery was still happening. And woman were not allowed to go in public with out cuffing her face. After they started voting they spent more time arguing and less time working. But still work lots of work and slavery. Lots of things were will and lots of thing are fare but slavery was still happening. They voted using a marble case with columns with a disk. And a marked peace of wood for each day that the marks pointed at your disk you are voting. And lots of people were rich. There was lots of great buildings and frames.

I think it was very unfair that 1/3 Athens were slaves. As soon as you became a slave you lost your freedom and virtue. If you were not free you could not be litical. 9 out of 10 of the population were able to vote. The remaining free Athenian women were automatically disqualified. Women were not supposed to be seen so they wore face vails. Married women were the possession of the husband who was the only person she would reveal her face to. Which proves women were not treated equally or fairly. All women were treated unfairly not just a couple of unlucky women but only some men became slaves which can cause diseases, sickness, and is not good for muscles. Also it would be hard to not have freedom which is very important. Everybody should have freedom for family, religion, and much more. Over all I believe that it was less fair before democracy.

I think that it was not fair because to vote u had to be a man both your mom and dad had to be born in Athens and u had to not be a slave and 1 out of 3 people where slaves , and u also needed to complete military traning so very little citizens got to vote in the end . If u where a women u where not allowed to vote cause they though women where demonic and evil wich is not true at all. Athens was very strict about how good to vote and who didn't but I know that seems bad but it is good in a way to because only certain people can vote cause they don't want evil people electing dictators and it also bad because almost everyone in Athens did not get to vote. Over all I do not think it is fair

   I don't think the Athenian democracy system is fair because if you and your parents weren't born in Athen then you wouldn't be considered as a citizen, you couldn't vote, have property, you had to be a slave. Athen had a slave market where if you weren't a citizen then you could be bought or sold there, you might be separated by your family, and the only reason Athenians was able to do anything else really is because they'de make the slaves do all the dirty work. 
 Think of it this way if you moved from your home town to go to another place and you or your parents weren't from there and you had to work for the people in that city because you were bough tats slave market you were separated from your parents you'd probably have to clean houses you wouldn't have a say or anyone to look after you. This is I don't  it was very fair. 

A Short Story in One Page

    "You chose the cereal,” announced my mom. “Now eat it.”
    I stared at it – a lump of green sludge that looked like someone had tossed a handful of grass into a bowl of milk. The only reason I picked the cereal was because there were coupons on the box for a free movie. Now they sat there and mocked me.
    I really wanted those coupons. I wanted to see the new sci fi extravaganza about aliens blowing up the universe. My mom said there ?were more constructive ways to spend an evening, and that we couldn’t afford full priced movies besides. She said I could either wait until it came to the discount theatre or pay for it myself.
     I really wanted those coupons.
     I did NOT, though, want them enough to eat the green sludge. I nudged it with my spoon and I swear it moved, shifting out of the way. ?“Mom,” I called, “I think this cereal is alive.”
     “Just eat it, Jason!”
     I checked out the movie coupons. They were on the back of the box, right up at the top. I wouldn’t even have to remove the green sludge packet to get them.
     Moving quietly so my mom wouldn’t hear me, I tiptoed into the kitchen and eased a drawer open, rummaging around until I found the scissors. Then I crept back to the table, looking left and right in case my mom pulled a superspy and appeared out of nowhere. She does that.
     A grin spread across my face. No Mom. Those tickets were mine! Bye bye, green sludge – hello, space aliens.
     I tipped the box sideways and slid the scissors against the panel. Just as I went to make the first cut, the box skittered across the table. I couldn’t believe it. Maybe the green sludge cereal WAS alive, and it was trying to thwart me.
     But then I noticed that the box was attached to a hand, and the hand was attached to an arm, and the arm was attached to my mom. And she did NOT look happy. “You want the coupons, you eat the cereal, Jason.”
     She took the box with her when she left. I sat back down at the table, poked the green sludge – by now it had absorbed all the milk and puffed up to twice its original size – and worked my spoon into the mess. Holding my breath, I shovelled the gunk into my mouth and gulped it down as fast as I could, chasing it with orange juice, until the bowl was empty.
     My stomach rumbled. One bowl down. Twenty more to go.

Is Athenian democracy fair?

No, Athenian democracy was not fair. All citizens were allowed to vote but only men over the age of 20 that completed their military training were considered citizens. One in three Athenian people were slaves. Slaves, women and metics were not citizens and did not get a chance to be leader or have their voice heard. There were age restrictions and not only you had to be born in Athens, but your mother and father had to be born in Athens too. I do not think Athenian democracy was fair because they let every citizen have a chance to be leader and to share their opinion but most people were not considered citizens and did not get a chance to share their opinion. I think they could of made it fair by giving every single person in Athens (within an age limit), including slaves, women and metics a chance to be a citizen and participate in politics.

Fair or not!

I believe Athenian democracy is not fair. I believe this because not only does everybody not get to vote or get a say in important things in their life but women were not aloud to to show there faces just there eyes. Another reason I strongly disagree with this kind of democracy is because one in three people were slaves in the city. I have a feeling in Athens it was more equity then equality. I believe that statement because People who were higher up in government were treated better. Slaves were not very well treated.Slaves were separated from their families and traded. Not only was it not right but it was cruel. I think they could've changed this by paying the slaves and not trading them and stop separating them from there families. I believe that the slaves should've got fed no matter what circumstances. I also think that the slaves should've got paid with money so if the slaves ended up not getting fed they could pay for food. Those are just a couple of ways that certain democercy could have been changed for the better.

Dear Grandma,

It gets harder and harder every day, if we don't work we don't get food. The worst part is that the Athenians claim they have a democracy where everyone is fair, but the only people who are fair are the 'citizens'. Men over the age of 20 who were born in Athens and whose parents were born in Athens were the only ones considered citizens. Today my friend Scrubs got beat because he was caught taking a break, so now he doesn't get any food tomorrow. I was thinking about sharing my food with him but food is to precious to share, since we only get a little bit. It is very tough out here, I just wish I could move back to Rome with you.

I don't think it is fair because everyone should have a chance to vote but like most voting majority rules. But 1/3rd of them don't get a vote. I think that it is important to have all the adults vote so that they could live a good life. I also think that in order to vote you should have to sign a paper saying that you will vote responsibly. And just like here I think you have to be 18 or older not just in the army. So that means that you can’t vote until you’re an adult. I think that it would be better if they can vote instead of just army men over the age of 20. There were many slaves in Athens they couldn’t vote even if they were men over the age of 20. Women were not treated equally so that means they could not vote

Dear, grandma I have been a slave for a few weeks now, I do not get paid and if I make a mistake I don't get food for a day. But I'm fine. I think it is interesting how they run government here, but living here is hard. I have to do a lot of work and i have been soled a couple of times. I think democracy is a good idea, but I think every one should be a citizen. Not being a citizen is hard, you have no say in how the government should work and you have to do all the work men citizens don't want to do. A day in a life of a slave by Abbie

Day 1 today I had to plant the carrots, peas, beans, and potatoes water all the crops and weed I had missed 1 weed and I missed lunch that day then they were talking and I overheard that if I missed one more crop or missed a weed they would sell me. Great. So then I worked very hard and when I was done they did not like how I had done and I missed supper that night. Now I'm trying to finger out something that can impress them. Maybe I could take their 3 kids off of their hands for a day or make breakfast for them or I could always do something they would like so they would not sell me. I dislike that every morning I get to miss breakfast I just wish I could get some food around here I starve some times because my masters are so mean they like things to spotless or they like to see not a single weed or crop dry or droughnded in water witch is sometimes hard to do when it will not take any water but most of the time when they are mad they take it out on me when I'm done my job and there mad they say they don't like it. I have become very weak so I really need to impress them.

The Ancient Athens didn't have a very fair system, but for some people it was fair. I think that the most unfair part was that only men who's parents where both born in Athens. Which elemanats all women, men who have one parent, people who dont have any parents born in Athens and new people h who just moved to Athens. Although for the Men that were conceterd citezens it was fair to them because they got a say and got to make the decitions. I think that they should of let women and people who have newly moved into Athens.Athens had a great system for fairness but only included few people. The greatest longest lasting democratic leader was Pericles; after his death, Athens democracy was twice briefly interrupted by oligarchic revolution towards the end peloponnsine war.

I don’t think that it was fair because the people were slaves. I mean why would you force your people to be slaves. I think they could have found better ways of doing it like hire people for jobs or have volunteers. But then again if they were making the people do bad things nobody would vote. But I still think that they should have found a better way to do it. And I also think that it’s not fair that the were in building with other people and they couldn’t see there family’s. Besides why would the people stay there if they were forced to be slaves. I think that it would tear the city apart. I also think that it would make people mad and angry at their leaders. It would cause them to try to put there leaders out of power… Well they did they killed their leaders.

I think it's not fair because they use two people and when someone wins it could lead to war. Then also women did not have rights to vote and men technically owned women so they didn't have any rights to vote or they couldn't get any jobs.they just had to stay at home and do house work. Instead of getting a paying job it was then hard for family's because if Men got fired then that family loses money. So instead of having two people voting they should just have one guy to lead and create all assembly's for the town. There's another thing girls couldn't do. In Athens was run the the city because all men had a disbelief in women and thought they had no potential. So in Athens they really didn't need women because they had no part. Athenian Democracy (Holden)

I don't think Athenian democracy was fair because, their was one person who ruled over everyone (the Tyrant). Whatever the tyrants said went so they could do anything they wanted. Soon the people of Athens kicked the Tyrants out of Athens forever. It was not fair that people were bought and sold as slaves. There voting was different if they didn't like the person who was on the stand they would roar until the person got down and someone else came. In Athenian democracy woman were not counted as citizens the people thought that women were demonic and possessed by demons they thought that women had to wear a full face vail so that know one would see them. In voting they would have someone called an orator who would run against another orator to see who would get the peoples votes, they would also try to persuade the people to get them on there side. So that is why I think Athenian democracy was not fair.

I think it was not fair, because people were excluded. Because people who were born atheneum did not have to be slaves. But there parents also had to atheneum, and if they were not, then they all had to be slaves. But the people who were full Atheneum did not have to be slaves and were basicly free. I think that they all should have been equal. In most country's, they don't have slaves. They should be more like other country's and not have any slaves. And also, people who are citizens get freedom to do what they want and have fun, then slaves are forced into work, it is just not fair. Also, they said in the video that Men technically own Woman. I just finished doing a Video on Athens history so hear is my review. In the Video they just found the remains of a watch tower. The livening quarters surrounding the watch tower used to be homes. Not cittens homes though they were slaves homes.seams the Athens wanted to keep their slaves under 24 hour survalence. Most of the people who lived there were slaves. Close by were they were standing was an old slave market. Most slaves began there lives as regular men and women. They were forced into a life of manual labor when captured as cittens of war.they were bought and sold separated from their family's. The Greeks refers to them as man footed things. Nine tenths of the people were bought and sold in action. And that's my summary of the Vedio of Athens history.

I think that Ancient Athens democracy was pretty fair. They made sure that everything was fair, although they took it a little seriously. They made others do their dirty work for them, so they could do their voting and stuff. I don't like the way that they had slaves, but I bet that they thought it was pretty convenient at the time, because they didn't have to do any of the work. They probably weren't thinking of the slaves feelings, just how it would benefit themselves. Some of the masters were probably kind to the slaves, so that's good. I can also see that they didn't want to capture the enemy then give them back. I also don't think it's fair that anyone that wan't born in Athens wasn't aloud to vote, but maybe the people of Athens thought that anyone who wasn't born in the city wasn't worthy to vote because they were aliens, or they weren't there when the tyrant was over thrown, or they weren't noble enough or something like that. I wonder where they got the idea where women were posses with demons? It's just weird. maybe they just wanted to control the women to their advantage. I don't know. But I think that Athens democracy was way different then Canada's. Ancient Athens: Was it Fair?( Lauren)

The Ancient athens had a not very fair voting system, but at the same time it was fair but only for certain  people. The reason why was because only men we're able to vote, but only men who's parents were both born in Athens. And that eliminates all women, even the women who's both parents were born in Athens. The rule also makes men who only had one parent born in Athens, or no parents born in Athens, but lived in  Athens could not vote. Slaves couldn't vote either. Oh don't forget about the age restriction! the age restriction was over 20. So that is leaves a small amount of people who were considerd citizensBut for the men who's parents were both born in Athens and were over 20 they get a quite fair system.
  I think that Acient Athen democracy was not fair, but at the same time i think it was some what fair. The biggest no to me is that only men who were born in athens and both parents too, and over 20 were the only ones that wherealoud to vote. I think that women should be allowed to vote. also I think that instead of the both parents born in Athens and you born in Athens it should of been thata you do like a test thing and see if you can be a citzen. I think that Ancient  Athens should have been more fair in democracy!!

I thought it was unfair that women had to cover their face. I thought it was incredible that 1/3 Athenians were slaves. I knew there were slaves in country's then and now but not that high a ratio. I feel that what the Greek called slaves was not respectful at all. I get that they were fighting a battle with you and were captured but really, "man things". I thought it was ridiculous the things they did to slaves. Why would you want someone to be a prisoner to you, just to brag to others. I thought it was strange how only people born in Athens could vote. You would think if slaves served a certain number of years in their military they would gain voting rights.

In my opinion I don’t think that athenian democracy was fair to women because they were not treated equally to men. Women had to wear their robes so that they would cover up their face and I don’t think that it is very fair because women are just the same as men and shouldn’t have to hide themselves like that. I also didn’t think that the slavery was fair either. It was just making people work for little to no money. Slaves had to do very hard labour that isn’t fair for anyone to do. If you were a slave you could not run for power to be leader because you weren’t free and I think that you should be able to run for leader no matter if you are a slave or not.

The great Athenian Democracy (Adam R)

I think that Athens was not fair because a third of the population in Athens was slaves. 2 thirds were men and women. women were already disqualified because the Athenians believed that women were possessed. But not only did you have to be male to vote, you mother and father both had to be born in Athens, AND you had to have completed your military training to be 100% a citizen. So you HAD to be a citizen to vote. But surprisingly, 6000 citizens were able to vote. Anyway back to women being possessed. so since women were thought to be possessed they were needed to be controlled to they made women have to wear special clothes that hid there faces from people. But they would only show there faces to their husbands. So back to slaves. Slave were mostly prisoners of war and once they were captured they lost all their rights, so if they were once free men/women, they would have lost lots of their rights. They had lots of watchtowers to keep their prisoners/slaves under 24 hour watch. They were called "man footed things"(stupid name right?). Anyway, back to voting. Athens would guesstimate the vote and see witch side won. Special people who were especially skilled would guesstimate. they would vote on how they would run their lives. If the people REALLY disliked an opinion, they would boo him down. so those are the reasons i think Athens was unfair but others might think differently. This is my blog post about Athens by Adam R.

Athens Democracy Fair or Not

I don't think that the Athens were fair because they basically forced about a hundred people to do all the speaking and stuff. They also made a bunch of married women wear these dresses that had a mask that they need to were when ever doing anything the only time they could ever take it off was when they were with family in there houses. I also think its unfair since they had so many slaves in the video they said every 1-10 people born usually become slaves for the government and were separated from there families and forced to work. And most of them never got to see there families ever again. They also said that only 1-20 slaves get's released but when they do get released they need to run around looking for there parents but I don't think they will because they probably will get released when there older and there parents wont remember them. And they probably would get scared if they don't remember you and you pop out and say Mom Dad.

1a)what is it you ask a tool a klepsydra is a water clock. 1b)it was used for timing how long oral presentations were in the jury and council 2) where is it from it's from Egypt but then later on it went to Athens later on 3)who made made it. It's unknown but I believe it was someone who wanted the oral speeches to be a fair length of time 4) when was it made 2000b.c 5)what it teaches me is that they wanted to make the equal lengths of time for the speeches It also teaches me that they wanted to start making an equal government.

Help I am stuck with the Athens

Dear Great Aunt Susie How are you? I am not doing so great, as you know I was forced to join the army when I was only twelve along with papa, some men and some other boys my age. Unfortunately I was kidnapped along with the other boys my age, but papa and the other men were taken away and starved to death. I was taken straight to Greece to work as a slave for the citizens and their families, at the time I was happy to be alive and away from war but as I walked down the street hand cuffed to my good friend Mike, with solders all around us it felt like I was a prisoner only I wasn't a cell the soldiers had ordered us to clean the streets while they looked for families that were willing to pay big money for one of us. I can not describe to you how much garbage were in those streets I must have been cleaning for at least three hours when a family with two young children walked over with one of the soldiers he said to them "take your pick" what? I thought we are humans not dogs can't they see that? Two days after I had moved in with the family I learnt that I was now going to be treated like a dog. Ten years later and here I am still stuck with the same family only now I have learnt a few things such as slaves are like pets if they are "bad" they do not get food (e.g the first Sunday I took the day off like back in Littleton we always celebrate God on Sundays little as I knew I was not aloud the day off and didn't eat for three days.) After that it was the town voting day and all citizens were encouraged to vote, great I thought, an accuse to leave the house for a few hours so off I went to vote, soon to find out that I couldn't vote.So what can I do I thought, well I can clean the house pick up garbage and eat the scraps of the familie that owns me. don’t think that the Athens democracy was fair because, there were only about 75 or 100 people who moved the buildings and did all the speaking and also women were seen as spirits and they needed to be watched at all times so that was also not fair and people were bought and sold to random people that they don’t even know and of that happened to me then I would be very uncomfortable for a long while and that should never happen to kids and it is totally unfair and it’s hard to believe that the people running the place would allow that. I am really glad that it is not allowed in this time but it could be aloud somewhere else in the world but it shouldn’t be allowed unless you really don’t want the kid or something I guess it would give you money and save food for you and many someone else.

I think Athenian democracy was unfair because most people were excluded. The only people who were included were men over the age of 20 who were born in Athens and whose parents were born in Athens; they were the only ones who were considered citizens. Women were not citizens because they were thought to be possessed by evil demons. Slaves were not citizens because they were thought to be unimportant. Everybody was always saying that Athenian democracy was fair, but it wasn't. There were only a few people who were allowed to vote and participate in democracy. Sure there was a lot of good technology created, but that doesn't really matter if there are only a few people who can participate and use that technology. There is really no point of having a democracy if not everyone is allowed to vote and participate. The Athenians had a great idea but they should have let everyone participate.

Dear father,
I feel that life as a slave is very unfair.
The reason I think this is because they just captured me as a slave for no reason and now instead of spending time relaxing and playing with my children I an doing hard work inside the house.

I am treated very much like dirt. If I work hard enough all day then I get the left over food scraps from their big feasts they eat every night .in the evening the men at this house go to Agora and vote or party.

The women at this house like to complain about how they do not get to vote and don't count as citizens.
I often look outside and see the other slaves being sold and having to do the same as me.

Its been really hard here none stop work if i even take a little break i wont get any food im praying for someone to come and save us every day it just gets worse i hope this blows off soon. Athenian democracy is not fair in my opinion. 1 in 3 people were slaves in Athens which by the way is not fair at all. Women were refererd as slaves because they stayed at home usually. The Athens law was that to be a citizen you have to be a male fished military training and you have to be born there. Leaders are chosen by lottery but you had to be a citazen. If you were not a citizen you were were treated like slaves and could not vote or own anything. That means all women and some men were not citizens. In this city 1 3rd of the Athens were not citizens .I do not think the Athens law was fair because not everyone was not equal. I think men and women should have the same rights .  I think that women should be citizens  to because men are no more important than women.    Athens started Democracy when their rulers tried to impose their power. The people of Athens rioted and stormed the Acropolis. Thus creating democracy. Now democracy was named after the Greek words "demos" which means people and "cratos" which means power. People Power. The name went all around Ancient Greek. It seems all fair and good but it was not as wonderful as it is today.... Only CITIZENS could vote. Citizens where men over 20 who's parents where born in Athens. Slaves, females and free people did not have a vote? When you went to speak and people didn't like what you where saying they would boo and scream until you where so discouraged that you would step down.

                 Now that you know more about democracy in Ancient Athens I will explain my case.
        From a female's point of view I believe that it was not fair in many ways. Yes, it was much better than the Tyrants ruling over but it was not exactly wonderful. Everyone in Canada over 18 can vote if they are a Canadian citizen. Even if you are not one yet you can still become one in a few years. It was very hard to say your opinion without getting boo-ed by someone so it took a lot of courage.
          The good side is that everyone who was a citizen had a voice and no matter what job you had you could sit where ever and say something to the crowd. Your opinion always had a chance and you could think what you wanted.
        Modern day democracy has improved a lot and shows Athens mistakes.
I believe it was not as fair as it could be but I see reason.

I personally think democracy in ancient Athens was fair for the men, but not for the women. Women weren't considered citizens of Athens, while the men were. There were some restrictions on voting for the men though. I think Athenian democracy could be improved.
