Athenian Democracy(Logan)

I think Athenian democracy was unfair because most people were excluded. The only people who were included were men over the age of 20 who were born in Athens and whose parents were born in Athens; they were the only ones who were considered citizens. Women were not citizens because they were thought to be possessed by evil demons. Slaves were not citizens because they were thought to be unimportant. Everybody was always saying that Athenian democracy was fair, but it wasn't. There were only a few people who were allowed to vote and participate in democracy. Sure there was a lot of good technology created, but that doesn't really matter if there are only a few people who can participate and use that technology. There is really no point of having a democracy if not everyone is allowed to vote and participate. The Athenians had a great idea but they should have let everyone participate.

Dear father,
I feel that life as a slave is very unfair.
The reason I think this is because they just captured me as a slave for no reason and now instead of spending time relaxing and playing with my children I an doing hard work inside the house.

I am treated very much like dirt. If I work hard enough all day then I get the left over food scraps from their big feasts they eat every night .in the evening the men at this house go to Agora and vote or party.

The women at this house like to complain about how they do not get to vote and don't count as citizens.
I often look outside and see the other slaves being sold and having to do the same as me.

Its been really hard here none stop work if i even take a little break i wont get any food im praying for someone to come and save us every day it just gets worse i hope this blows off soon. Athens is horable as a slave the worst part in my mind is that we dont even get a little say in anything i hope that someone will start to fight aganst this.Im also hoping for slaves to get a say. We have to watch poeple not do anything and watch them vote on things i have never seen them do one second of work i miss my family i hope the best for them

Athenian democracy is not fair in my opinion. 1 in 3 people were slaves in Athens which by the way is not fair at all. Women were refererd as slaves because they stayed at home usually. Slaves were bought and sold around Athens. When people became slaves they lost half there virtues. To vote in democracy you had to be from Athens, male, over 20 years old and both your father and your mother had to be from Athens. Nine tenths of Athens was barred from voting because of there virtues. Women were believed to un-equal and women were usually wearing a type of clothing that covered there face. Women were said to be possessed by demones (Greek word). A married women was the possession of the man. Greeks called people who could participate in the voting but did not idiots. usually there would be 2 orators that would debate on things

The Athens law was that to be a citizen you have to be a male fished military training and you have to be born there. Leaders are chosen by lottery but you had to be a citazen. If you were not a citizen you were were treated like slaves and could not vote or own anything. That means all women and some men were not citizens. Women was married could not show there hair and face and could only take of the vail that covered her face at home. In this city 1 3rd of the Athens were not citizens .I do not think the Athens law was fair because not everyone was not equal. I think men and women should have the same rights .  I think that women should be citizens  to because men are no more important than women. The Athens law was also not far because they chose there leaders every year by lottery and if some crazy people were chosen then something bad could happen.

   Athens started Democracy when their rulers tried to impose their power. The people of Athens rioted and stormed the Acropolis. Thus creating democracy. Now democracy was named after the Greek words "demos" which means people and "cratos" which means power. People Power. The name went all around Ancient Greek. It seems all fair and good but it was not as wonderful as it is today.... Only CITIZENS could vote. Citizens where men over 20 who's parents where born in Athens. Slaves, females and free people did not have a vote? When you went to speak and people didn't like what you where saying they would boo and scream until you where so discouraged that you would step down.

                 Now that you know more about democracy in Ancient Athens I will explain my case.
        From a female's point of view I believe that it was not fair in many ways. Yes, it was much better than the Tyrants ruling over but it was not exactly wonderful. Everyone in Canada over 18 can vote if they are a Canadian citizen. Even if you are not one yet you can still become one in a few years. It was very hard to say your opinion without getting boo-ed by someone so it took a lot of courage.
          The good side is that everyone who was a citizen had a voice and no matter what job you had you could sit where ever and say something to the crowd. Your opinion always had a chance and you could think what you wanted.
        Modern day democracy has improved a lot and shows Athens mistakes.
I believe it was not as fair as it could be but I see reason.

I personally think democracy in ancient Athens was fair for the men, but not for the women. Women weren't considered citizens of Athens, while the men were. There were some restrictions on voting for the men though. An age limit of 20, you had to have completed military training, you had to have been born in Athens, and both of your parents had to have been born in Athens too. Back to the unfairness for women. They were considered to be possessed by demons, and had to stay cloaked when they went out in public. Also, most women were kept as slaves. Also, married women were considered to be the posession of the man, and she could only unveil herself for him. Women were treated like items, not like living human beings. I think Athenian democracy could be improved. Some ways I think they could improve are: Equality for the women, making the rules on who could vote less strict, making the rules on who was counted as a citizen less strict, and not using slaves. From my point of view, Athenian democracy was ok, but could use some improvement.
