Voting Rights
in Canada
What Happened?
Minority groups were denied the right to vote. The
only people allowed to vote were rich male Canadian citizens 18 and over.
Why it was unjust?
All groups should be able to have the right to
express their opinion. Not just a small group of people who fit a certain standard.
Whether it went against the Charter of
Rights and Freedoms
It went against the fundamental freedoms, the
democratic rights and the equality rights. In the fundamental freedoms it says you
have the freedom of belief but back then minority groups were not allowed to
share their beliefs. The democratic rights state says you have the right to
vote but they didn’t. Also in the equality rights it say they have equal benefits
which minority groups did not have.
Do you think it would happen today?
Not in Canada, people now realize that everyone should
be treated equal. All people are important no matter their gender color of skin
or religious belief. People nowadays accept that.
